Southland Casino, West Memphis

The state of Tennessee has quite some strict gambling laws, but as a city bordering both Mississippi and Arkansas, Memphis seemed to have has figured out a number ways to get around that. One of these curated methods is directing avid gamblers to venues such as the Southland Casino. Situated in West Memphis, a city that technically speaking falls outside the state lines, Southland Casino is an unquestionable haven for ramblers and gamblers alike. It offers table games, slots, lotteries and cards, without any worry regarding the usual restrictions.

Formerly known as Southland Park Gaming & Racing, Southland Casino, is a buffet, casino, and greyhound racetrack in 2019, 6,656 greyhound races took place here. Simulcast thoroughbred and greyhound races from other tracks around the US are also offered at Southland. After experiencing low attendance for several years, this gambling destination regained popularity given the fact that the neighboring casinos in Tunica, Mississippi experienced devastating floods in the year 2011. In 2014, it was announced that Southland Casino had plans to undergo expansion and renovation, to the tune of $38 million.

Southland Casino started as a dog racing track back in 1956. During its launching in 1956, Southland became the region’s only greyhound racetrack, following in the tradition of Riverside Kennel Club, which was the first greyhound track in West Memphis. Riverside had been situated at the end of Mississippi River Bridge, right between West Memphis and Memphis, Tennessee, and in its years of existence, it proved to be quite a popular diversion. Southland Casino was then established to ride along that popularity.

The casino’s original owner was the Upton family, alongside a couple of other investors. However, in 1970, it was purchased by Delaware North Companies. Generally, Tennessee does not allow for traditional slot machines. Rather, the games offered are all ‘electronic games of skill’, in accordance to the state’s Racing Commission Regulation rules that govern all franchise holders that operate any electronic games of skill. By definition, electronic games of skills are any games that are played through any machine or electronic device that gives players an opportunity to exercise their judgment or skill, with the outcome of the game not depending or being controlled by chance alone.
